Fishing Canaveral Beach 5 on November 5, 2008
working this weekend, so cut out on wed and got to canaveral around 11. high tide at noon. much rougher surf than i expected, and stronger winds. not a lot of weed out there, but it was an issue sometimes. bite wasn’t very good—lots and lots of blues, tore up my rigs but i didn’t have any wire, so just kept making them. the surf was really rough and i’ve never lost so many fish—i must have lost five fish in one afternoon. brought them up to the beach and they’d get ripped off by the rip or current. most were blues that managed finally to bite thru the leader, but i saw at least one undersized red washed back out. caught some good-sized blues and one 16” whiting. around sunset the black drum really go it going on—caught three in succession, only one a keeper.
oh, also caught the biggest cat i’ve seen—24”. damn, that thing gave me a fight. ounce for ounce, it’s gotta be the fiercest fighter out there. been a while since i’ve caught a cat. water was a bit turbid.
mid-afternoon, hooked something on my big pole that just rode my drag way out. i only had 20# test, and fought it for a while, but i knew there was no way i was bringing it in. the hook must have ripped out about 5 minutes into the fight. i was glad to get my rig back, but i wonder what it was that made my reel scream?
all in all, not a great day of fishing, but, then, a day on the beach in fla is never bad.
