Fishing Canaveral

For the first time in a few weeks the wind was blowing at a pleasant 7 knots from the west instead of dragging Sargasso onto the coast from the northeast. T-Dogg and I fished the first parking lot in Canaveral, mostly in the close trough, late morning, incoming tide. There was still a fair amount of seaweed, but not enough to dissuade me from fishing. It was the first day of the dry season—cool and low dewpoint.

Not a great day, but lots of action: Bonnets (too many), one 24 inch Blacktip Shark, Blues, Whiting (one of them nice size, 16”), and 2 undersized Jack Cravalles. (Lots of fight, no fillets in those Jacks!) T-Dogg got some Whiting and Sailfins.

I used a light pomano rig with a triple drop (until the blues tore it up). Fresh shrimp baited on 1/0 circles. The Blacktip and a nice big Blue on a fish finder made from 40# mono, baited with mullet on 4/0 hook with a six ounce spider weight. I had forgotten to add some line to my big reel, so I was limited to fishing the first trough.

For a little over two hours of fishing, not a bad day. Enough Whiting for a fish fry.
